What is Microbial Community Profiling?
Microbial community profiling involves the systematic identification and characterization of microorganisms bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites present in clinical or environmental samples. Technologies such as 16S rRNA gene sequencing, shotgun metagenomics, and metatranscriptomics enable researchers to capture not only the presence but also the functional potential and activity of these microbes. Unlike conventional diagnostics, this method detects both cultivable and uncultivable species, allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of microbial diversity in infectious disease contexts.
